"A bush yarn that is told by Reg McClement his first time out log cutting"
I hear the bush bird sing,
its whistle gives out a piecing ring.
The air is still, but the tree still sways,
I can hear the bush a mile away.
I close my eyes, and what is it I hear?
the rustles of the leaves and a cricket near.
Theres many a sound in the bush, I say,
it surrounds you, in a magical way.
I hear the axe against the tree,
soon enough it will be set free,
and leave a stump that’s left behind,
for future fellers, it will remind.
The bush is where I want to be,
there’s nothing better than falling trees.

Back in the early days many a log cutter sat around after a long day at their bush camp by the fire drinking tea from a billy and telling yarns or reciting bush poetry.
The Sawmillers Daughter captures that essence of what it would have been like!
